Flames

Hey guys! Bea here! And I have arts to share!

Kelly- Commissioned by Rebellious

Flame-Small

This is one that I actually finished about a month ago– I just never got around to posting it.

As simple as this illustration is, it did pose it’s own set of challenges. I personally would have preferred to work from a direct model in a controlled setting so I could get the lighting I wanted in the most accurate way, and more accurate anatomy, but instead I had to rely heavily on my imagination for this one.

Because of this, there were quite a few transitions between the final version and the first draft. Attached a little animation for you guys, so you can see the comparison.

As always, it’s cool seeing how my style progresses with these transitions, especially when I’m dealing with an early draft that was conceived many months prior to the completion of the image.

Unfortunately it was among a few commissions I was in the process of doing around the time I got sick, so the delay was long. I think it worked out for the better in the long run though, since the quality turned out much better with the skills I gained in that stretch of time. And I’m happy to say that my client is very pleased!

Well, this post is a brief one, but I’m glad to say that I’ve made some significant progress on some of my other commissions which I will be sharing throughout the week! So, new arts coming soon!

Hope you liked this post, and as always, Enjoy!

Busy Bea

Hey Guys! Bea here! Hope all is well on your end 🙂

As the title suggests, I am a very very busy Bea, considering I have quite the list of commissions that I’m working through at the moment, on top of my regular work. While it may be a while before some of these illustrations are complete since I’m still in the draft phase,  I’m glad to say that I’ve been given the go-ahead to share the process work 🙂

Also, at least one of the photos shared today is coming directly from my Instagram account, which I’ve recently joined at https://www.instagram.com/jackson.bea/  . I’ve been making a habit of posting works in progress there before anywhere else, so if you care to see what I’m up to in my downtime,  feel free to follow 😀

First up, the second draft of a book cover, featuring a female werewolf

wolfCov1.jpg

For the most part, I’m still roughing this one out– though the colors are pretty solid as it is since it’s supposed to be very muted, with highlights of gold. Because this book will be the first in a series, I believe, it was decided that we’d take a more straightforward approach with the design, by treating it like an introduction to her character. The idea was to communicate who she is, what she looks like, and to tell a little bit about her–specifically the fact that she’s a werewolf/huntress.

Since the eyes are the windows to the soul, I figured that’s the best place to start. Therefore, what you see here is as the full moon approaches, and she’s on the brink of turning,  her eyes glow a golden color, giving insight to the wolf in her, and foreshadowing her becoming the wolf, as seen in the wolf eyes peering through the darker part of the sky.

I’m not sure on her pose just yet, and there’s a lot of room for improvements, so I’ll be doing quite a bit of experimenting with this one until I’m satisfied with the concept before I begin to work towards a final piece. So far tho, it’s a good start!

The second image is an update from an earlier work in progress that ended up on hold due to the demand of the holidays-

This one is not that far off from being done. In fact, it’s only about two days left of work in it.  The concept behind it, is she’s like a superhero/ empowered woman. To help me get an idea of what he was looking for, the client posed himself,  and had his own professional photography done, similar to this, which I drew my color pallet from. Mostly, it’s the face and the flames that need work, and her body needs to be rendered smoother all around, before it will be complete!

Over the next week, I’ll likely have more works to share, since there are other projects that I’ve been committed to, outside of my regular work, so, that’s something to look forward too 😀

Well that’s all for today! I’m tired, need sleep x_x. In the meantime,  I hope you liked this post, and what I had to share, and as always, till next time,  Enjoy!

SuperHuman

Okay, I’mma just come out and say it– You guys are going to be seeing me draw a looooot of ladies this month. As much as I want to draw more mens, a lot of things I have planned revolve around the ladies– so, curves ahoy!

SuperHuman

Concept: Young woman, nude and “sitting pretty”– a term generally used to describe her exact pose,  with fire for hair. Half her face– bruised and scruffed with a mean eye, the other half, clean and polished.

Inspiration: Janelle Monáe, high fashion, superpowers

Reference:  Client posed on spot as I sketched.

In addition to my own works, I decided to commit this month to catching up with/and finishing some commissions, and because the deadlines for some of these are so far off, there’s no pressure 😀 Yay!

So what we have here, is a rough concept for the cover art I’m doing for the literary works of a my good friend, Deshaun Summers. He and I went to high school together, and a few years ago we somehow got in touch again. As it turns out, he’s an author now, and I’m still drawing 😀 Go figure!

I’ll try to include a small synopsis of the story, or what Deshaun wants to say about it in his own words later, but in simplest terms, its about women being strong, overcoming abuse. More to come later!

On a side note, I’d like to feature an artist I met through Deviant Art named Karii

She wrote me not too long ago, and was kind enough to ask my permission to use the pose in my Marble Study for her illustration. It may not sound like a big deal, but I have been a victim of art theft before, and on more than one occasion with both small named companies and big named publishers, so it means a lot when someone is courteous enough to ask permission. Thank you Karii! you’re awesome!
