Touch the Stars

January 1st, I took a challenge– to draw every day for 30 days. I was not prepared to do it, I just know I wanted to do it, to kick start the new year. It wasn’t a major accomplishment, I’m comparison to other challenges, but for me, it was.

The truth is, I don’t draw much…I always wished I did…I wish I had more time to draw freely, to learn and grow and become a better artist. But Life and obligations typically get in the way. So when I was given a month to relax, I decided I’d take that time and be productive and do the thing I always wished I could. I’d draw.

It was rough at first. I was so out of practice I didn’t even know where to begin. I had my doubts. But after about day 5, all that passed. It’s as if someone got the wheels turning my head and the ideas were flowing through my pen as I wrote them down, one after the other.  I felt alive– inspired– this is what it meant to draw! The joy of bringing those ideas to life!

It wasn’t all fine and dandy though. My arm hurt something awful because i wasn’t used to it all… but I kept pushing a sketch each day because I knew that some of you were watching, and I didn’t want to conk out, after I’d already committed…even when I hit a low and began thinking of my future as an artist. I have dreams and goals, but some of them seem so far out of reach…

I halfway wanted to quit, after that thought…but then another one came to mind.  If the endgame of your goals seem so far off you cant touch them, reach for the ones nearest to you that you can. Creating my blog, and completing this challenge, was one of my goals. and those small accomplishments, gave me the confidence that I can reach others.

So to follow up with my challenge, I combined everything I learned in thirty days, into a finished painting that gives life to the idea that we all can reach our goals– and with each one, we can touch the stars of our dreams.

BannerBlog1Thank you, everyone for helping me kickstart the new year, and for inspiring me, to keep goin! Stay tuned for more updates, and Enjoy!

Day 29

Even in the Light, You Cant Escape the Dark

Curtosy of Saimain

Saimain was the lucky winner of my raffle in the game I was hosting on DA called: Name that Illustrator!

Upon her request, Saimain asked that I do a sketch of one of her original characters. I chose to do Luke, a once bright but now troubled young man who cant escape the shadows of his past.

Congratulations again Saimain! Thanks for playing!

Day 28

Oliver and Nubia

Curtosy of Marc-André

Day 17, I challenged myself and drew two cats– Yin and Yang. In response to my post,  Mr. Marc-André Challenged me, to do it again, and asked if I could draw his two cats, Oliver and Nubia.

I checked out his blog and after studying Oliver and Nubia a while, I figured this would be a good depiction of them.If I’m right, the black cat is the more playful one?

Anyway, Challenge Accomplished Marc-Andre! I hope you like them!

Day 26

Aiden Strong

Today’s sketch, or rather, painting, is in memory of a little boy named Aiden who passed today, who also happens to be the son of one of my best friend’s cousins.  I’ve known about Aiden’s fight for his life since earlier this week after the injuries he sustained, keeping up with my friend, hoping, and praying along with countless others, that he’d pull through.

After making the decision to donate his organs to save the lives of other children, His parents requested, through Imgur  that his image be used artistically to turn him into his favorite super hero, Spiderman.

Upon seeing their request, It only seemed right to dedicate today’s sketch to Aiden, and his Family. My sincerest condolences to Aiden’s family, and their loss. aiden strong Image is photo edit/speed painting, which I made by arranging my reference photos into a collage, that I drew and painted over.

Day 25

Fortune Cookies

I love fortune cookies!

In addition to being delightfully delicious, each one has a special little message for you. Kind of like a letter in a bottle! Only, it’s a cookie!

Not only do I enjoy eating those marvelous cookies, but for some reason, back when I was in college, I began to collect the little strips of paper, in a jar in my room, from every cookie I ate, and from the cookies my friends ate!

So yeah….I have a jar full of fortunes!

My friends think I’m a little weird for it–they think I’m weird for a lot of things I do… But no matter!  After pulling a fortune,  I decided to use it as inspiration for today’s sketch, took a photo of it, and included it at the bottom.

As for the fortune, I agree. It is important to stay grounded 🙂

Day 24

Drowning Out the Noise

This week has  been especially hard for me. Ive dealt with so many distractions left and right, finding time to focus has been difficult. Even my mind wouldn’t shut up at times! So today’s sketch and my own personal lesson, is about quieting the noise. settling down to recenter my thoughts, and clear my head.

Hope you enjoy!

Day 22

Today is a new day– a better day– better than yesterday >_<

You probably wont believe it when I say this, but I was listening to Gene Kelly’s Singing in the Rain while doing this speed painting. Originally she was going to be a girl kicking up the rain, but, I got lazy– didn’t feel like drawing clothes or rain or puddles, lol so this is what came out of it. Instead of dancing in the rain, she’s basking in the sun. Even though she’s nude, I used shadows to keep her modest.
