Thursday Evening Post

Hey Guys! Bea here, and this time, I has new arts!

OctLoResFinally, something finished! Feels like it’s been forever since I’ve been able to do a full painting, considering I wasn’t feeling well enough to do it, but I’m so happy to be back on track, and I’m exciting about returning to some of the projects I started with my sketchbook exclusives too.

So, to tell you a bit about this illustration, the theme is burlesque, both are dancers, (for both sexes to enjoy because thats how it should be!) and it goes with the items I created for the month of October, for

— an odd coincidence because a lot of the art I’ve been doing lately  has been burlesque themed. I love it though, gave me an excuse to watch Moulin Rouge for the 100th time! That movie is friggen beautiful, guys!

On another note, a fun update from the 6 character commission that’s been in progress!

SethCharsloI am happy to announce that the lineup is complete for these character sketches, though, still a work in progress because everyone is naked right now :D. This commission is a challenging one though, in that I usually don’t get the opportunity to work with such unique body types, so a lot of research was needed to try and understand the anatomy of these characters while I worked. All in all, Im happy with how it’s turning out and even more happy that my client is happy :). annnd, in other news, I’ve just realized that I gave the men nipples and not the women o.o; hrm.

Anywho, I hope you liked this post– and I cant wait to bring you more as I’ve already started sketching with my fancy new art supplies 😀 So as always, enjoy!

San Diego Comic Con

IMG_38702015 has been a year of firsts. First time getting into blogging, first time building a portfolio (since highschool >_<), first time in San Diego, annnnnd first time at the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), and I must say, it was quite the experience! Though I must admit, my reason for going was a bit different from most.

I wasn’t there to collect anything or cosplay, or get into panels– which i knew was next to impossible given that people had been camping out for days, prior to me even taking flight– I went there, to share my work, in portfolio reviews– and to meet old friends for the first time, and make new ones 🙂 and pig out on Starbucks….which i do enough of already.

Starbucks aside, even though I went with an objective in mind, I got much more out of the experience than I was expecting to get.

So, where do I start? lol

It’s crowded as &$#%*!!

And no I didn’t use a naughty word just now…. The word I was thinking of was Fudge….mind out of the gutter people!!

Anywho! Crowded as Hell! Like, this pic is maybe about a quarter or less of the “inside” of the main floor which is so friggen huge, you cant see from one end to the other. Zygona was my traveling companion, and she documented that it took her about an hour, to get from one end of the hall to the other– and that’s at shuffle speed because it’s so packed all you can do is shuffle. Also keep in mind, this is just the first floor.

Unfortunately because the crowds were so dense, and I’m short, it was very difficult to see what was there, though I could tell, there was a lot, given that every time I braved the masses, i would see something different that I hadn’t before.

Sights and Sounds

Bea:  Okay Zygona, we have to find Finni, we have to stay on course or else we’re never going to get out of here– so don’t get distracted– OH LOOK AT THAT!!  *runs off*

Okay, we got distracted– admittedly I was the first one,  but, we found Finni, a fellow artist who I sooo admire, and afterwards, Zygona took photos of some of the things we found on the main floor!

There were a ton of showcases, much more than we could photograph, But this place was a collector’s dream. One thing you need to know though is– the rarer something is, or the more limited something is– be prepared to stand in line for it, and hope they have enough left by the time you reach the counter.

Speaking of lines, I hoped my friends were kidding when they said prepare to spend a lot of time in them. They wern’t. There is literally a line for almost everything! Some of them I didn’t know where they began or ended. There were quite a few experiences going on in and around the convention hall, like the Assassin’s Creed experience, where you ran this Ninja Warrior like course where you jump out of a tower at the end, or the Walking Dead experience where you brave zombies and hope you make it out alive, but because of the lines and my lack of patience, I didn’t get to try for myself. (secretly i would have chickened out). just the same, many of the panels featuring trailers released, or Game of Thrones, or Walking Dead,  people had been waited in line for days– there was just no getting in them. Fortunately much of the stuff was uploaded on you tube the next day so we were pretty caught up lol.

Even though I didn’t get into any panels or buy any exclusives, the highlight of my trip came in the form of portfolio reviews, which, as I mentioned was my main reason for going, and yes there was a line for those too lol. For 2 out of 3 days, I spent most of my time waiting to be seen, and I did– by ten different companies– and I got glowing reviews from every last one. Even better, many of them gave me advice, on what positions I would be best suited for as an artist, and what my next move should be. I was also told that I should try to do more sequential work, and focus on getting a booth at cons to promote and sell my work.

With that said, I’ve decided to take them up on their advice. Something I’ll discuss in the following post!

All in all, I don’t regret a moment of waiting to be seen. While I was sitting there, I was among many other artists, like myself, and had the privilege of making new friends as we exchanged our portfolios with each other! In fact, I’d like to dedicate this post to some of them–

Please meet– Katrina Zidichouski, illustrator and concept artist

and Ryamond Griego, also illustrator and concept artist

There were many more artist I met– I have to sift through business cards to find them, lol, but I hope to share their work too in future features.

Overall, I know I missed like 80% of what was going on around me, but the 20% I did experience was great, and I look forward to going again. Also, a tip for all whose interested in going– don’t let UPS rip you off– they like, hike their prices like 100% to ship stuff you buy– so, play it smart, and bring a luggage bag to check– chances are, you’ll save hundreds!

Also, since I literally never take pics of myself– and Zarl, a friend of ours, took this shot  of Me, Zygona, and Red, who Zy is picking at, I decided to share it.

Thanks for making the journey extra special guys!

Hope you liked this post! Till next time, Enjooooooy 😀

321 Comics- Update Preview

I’ve spent quite a bit of time restructuring the overall illustration for 321 Comic’s Panorama to remove a ton of the dead space that was in it, and give it a more cosy feel, while finding a color pallet that works well with it. Aka, LOOOOT of work lol. Quite a bit of it is still too messy to show— however here is a sample from a section of it that’s looking pretty good. 321previewThere is this thing I call “reaching my threshold point” where I’ll pretty much struggle through my ideas, trying different things hoping I’ll land on something that works. This applies to building a composition, and finding the right color scheme to work with. This process is often long and takes a lot out of me, but once I get to a place where I feel all my ideas have come together, and I’m comfortable enough to run with it, I’ve reached my threshold and it’s easy street from then on.

After fiddling with this image constantly, I’m finally at that place and I’m hoping to finish it completely in the next day or two. We shall see lol.

Till next time, Enjoy!

Thursday Evening Post

Hello! And good evening 😀

Bea here! And I come bearing arts and cookies! Though….only I can eat the cookies >_> sorry…i regret nothing…

Anywho, since we had a long weekend, with Monday being the Holiday, I decided to give myself a much needed break to recharge my batteries so I could prepare a nice post for Thursday.

Of all the projects I’m doing that I have deadlines closing in for, two of them, both still works in progress, I’m glad to be able to share with you all. Lets start with Felipe Cagno’s 321 Comic, Vol 2 Panorama commission

So a ton has changed! Basically the whole concept was redrawn. After talking with Felipe, he decided the best approach would be to draw it as if you’re caught in a moment, very similar to the Rockwell reference I’m using. There’s even a nod to it, with the little doggie if you can spot him 😀  That and he wanted it done in such a way that it showcased the sunlight pouring in. I don’t often work with warm colors, for some reason they are more of a challenge for me than cool colors are– but I’m enjoying working with this pallet so far.

Overall, the concept is there, the colors are blocked in, all that’s left to do is clean up and detailing- aka, the hard part lol! Because there’s so much going on, I’ll be working this Illustration throughout July, so, more updates soon!

As for Witch, well, She’ll be done a lot sooner– before my birthday. which is in just a few days! So lets have a look at where she’s at–

WITCHANNOne thing that I like to do, to help motivate me when I have a bunch of work on my plate is I’ll give myself rewards. My reward for finishing this, will be a trip to the zoo with all my friends, to celebrate. That, and want to work on this any longer. Reason being is I’m currently working on 4-5 other projects that I have to move onto as soon as this is done– >_<

Honestly, I don’t know how I pulling some of this stuff off, but, I am, so that’s good. YAY, PROGRESS!

A little bit about her– She’s a nature witch, and a keeper and protector of plants.  Usually when I draw characters like these, I take a lot of inspiration from things that interest me.  Like her, I love plants. My living room is practically a green house, mmkay? 18 plants and counting, some of which are heirlooms that are at least 50 years old, aka, way older than I am. I love them all!

Another source of inspiration is American Horror Story, Coven-, which is one of my favorite seasons of the series outside of Asylum. One of my favorite characters from that season is Misty Day. Her story was the most interesting, in my opinion and I loved her style, and totally understood her love of Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mack

So a combination of several loves of mine, all bundled into one lol.

Overall, I hope you guys like this post, as always, Enjoy!

Thursday Evening Post

First off I’d like to thank those who wished me well 🙂 I’m still under the weather, but thankfully I haven’t become bed ridden. I’ve been coasting between sick and not sick, for the past week. One day I feel great, the next day, I feel the symptoms coming on, but after taking my vitamins, drinking a lot of fresh teas, fruits and veggs, I’ve been well enough to stay on my feet. It’s the weather though– going from hot to cold and that weird in between place hat makes it hard for the body to adjust x_x. typical here in Michigan when the seasons are changing. Weather don’t know what it wants to do.

My goodness though– May already. Hard to believe we’re five months into the year. Makes me wish I was younger because time seemed to move much slower! Ah well– it’s a good time to step back and reflect, like what’s happened since I kick started my blog– and what I expect going forward.

Even though my blog isn’t anything huge, it’s been a pretty big challenge for me– and has impacted my life in many ways I didn’t expect. like, for years I was in a slump artistically, not learning, not growing, barely creating anything personal or new. It had been on my mind for a long time to start a blog but I didn’t have the drive or the confidence to go ahead and do it…But then, January rolled around– January 1st, and I had a “today is the day” moment, and even though I wasn’t ready for it, I kick started my blog with a 30 day sketch challenge, and took the Blogging 101 course to learn the ins and outs.

It was during this time, I met many of you who follow me today, and it’s because of you guys– inspiring me, inspiring my work, and supporting my blog that I have the drive to keep this thing going, especially now when I have so much weight on my shoulders that committing to these posts is hard.

It’s not a matter of having the right material to share, because I certainty have a lot of it! The issue is time. I’ve been on a race against the clock since securing my trip to California, and it’s been a constant struggle maintaining a balance between how I spend my time and energy to meet different obligations. Unfortunately some projects had to hit the back-burner until I’m in the clear. Even more unfortunate, so much of my energy is spent on other things, that I’ve been unable to give my blog that extra attention and care I’d like to.

Overall it’s going to be a rough couple of months, until this trip is over. I may slip up with my posts sometimes, but I’m determined to keep pushing forward, to keep growing, keep learning, keep posting and building this blog, even if it’s at a slower pace than I would like.

Aside from all the friends I’ve made since kick starting this blog, and all the wonderful people I’ve met, I realized that I created more art in five months than I ever have in my life, and instead of the 5 images I started with, I now have 33+ being featured– all of them new. That in itself, is an accomplishment for me lol!

As for the kitties I’ve been drawing for Katzenworld, I tried, but couldn’t muster up the energy to make it happen today lol! So I’m shooting for Monday to have those sketches complete 🙂

Again, thank you all for your continued support, and as always, enjoy!

Thursday Evening Post

I’ve been introducing you guys to quite a few kitties over the past couple of weeks. Well, today, I’d like to introduce you to a special someone of mine– Please meet Brook, aka, Boodah!

Brook1My chihwuwu, in human form :D!

brookersand uh… in dog form :D!

Contrary to popular belief, my chiwuwu is anything but loud. In fact– she’s a very quiet, an incredibly timid doggie, that’s easily frightened, especially by thunder and rain, which would explain why her ears were back in this photo >_<. She is however vocal when she’s excited, greeting you with doggie whimpers and squeelz that make you ponder if she’s trying to conjure up human words.

I love her! She’s mah baby, and a proud member of the household, so as a challenge to myself, I wanted to draw her portrait, but with her as a human!

This is something I actually wanted to do for quite some time, but only until recently was I able to commit to it, and I went through quite a few drafts, like these, to flesh out her design.

This draft being one I did about two years ago, featuring Brook getting into toilet paper, which she does, and begging for attention, which she also does, a lot >_<.

and this one, in preparation for final version

There were a few things that I knew for sure I wanted to do when I drew Brook. I wanted to show her personality and I wanted her eyes to be big. Brooks eyes are truly her best feature– big and brown and full of emotion. all things considered, it was only natural I drew her like an anime character, lol!

As mentioned in the Monday Evening Post, I was practicing a method I call the Blockout Method, with my painting. These drafts were done in a similar fashion, and I have a little animation following my process :D!

BrookanimateI usually work off quite a few references– some I make, and some I gather from stock or other sources. The 3rd ref is actually a stock image I purchased earlier in the year that I finally decided to use, for it’s color pallet. The background I painted is also based off the stock image.

Overall, I had fun painting Brook! and I look forward to doing similar portraits to other furry beasts that are near and dear to my heart 😀

Check back tomorrow for another update on the sketches for Katzenworld! Till next time, Enjoy!

Thursday Evening Post

Hey guys! I’m a little late with this post, mostly because I spent most of my day sleeping, and only got around to putting time in my drawing in the wee hours of the night. But here we are, and I bring you arts!

Our subject? a colored sketch of Katzenworld’s very own- Snowball!

As mentioned in my previous post, I’m working with Marc-André to produce art featuring the cats of Katzenworld– which include Snowball, Mao, Oliver, Nubia, Zelda, Catto and Angel. Cats are still challenging for me to draw– especially since I’m so used to drawing humans, but I’ve been taking my time to find a way to best approach this project.

One thing I like to do when I start a project like this, is focus on setting the tone that will be consistent throughout the series. I do this by producing an unrefined sketch, like this one, which simply gives an idea of the direction I’m going to take. This is my first draft, so, it is subject to change if Marc requests it.

Prior to creating the sketch, I had to consider how I would approach drawing each cat. Since I had already drawn Oliver and Nubia before to Marc’s Liking, I decided to do the same– which was to try to draw the cats in a way that expressed their character. To do this, I asked Marc to tell me little bit about each cat and their personality.

Here’s what I learned about Snowball! He is, cuddly, rowdy and they usually dub him “Boss cat” because he is always out and about looking for trouble. He’s also number 1 on Katzenworld’s current banner.

Knowing that about Snowball, I decided to stay true to the original banner– by featuring him outside, being out and about, only this time showing him in action, curiously stalking in the grass.

Going forward, I’ll be posting a sketch like this, of each cat in my Evening Posts, in addition to Marc’s description of them, until all cats are drawn before proceeding to completion– so, look forward to those!

Till next time, Enjoy!
