Hey Guys! Bea here!
Since I don’t get much time to work on my own projects, sometimes it takes me months to produce an original finished product. Well, this week I spent every day of it working on designs, and concepts, and commissions from sun up to sun down, so today, I decided to have a little me-time before getting back to it all.
Looking through a gallery of my sketches and concepts, I decided to give my Starbucks sketch a little love today!
So what changed? Well, quite a bit actually! In fact, here’s a little animation detailing the revisions, from the first stage, to the current one–
At first, I was pretty satisfied with the second draft of my Starbucks sketch, until a friend of mine brought it to my attention that since she’s a twin tailed mermaid, I need to bring more emphasis to it…and quite simply, the 2nd draft doesn’t cut it. Yes, it shows the twin tails, but all of it is so squeezed into the circle that the concept looks both cramped and anatomically, there’s no way her twin tails would fold that way, considering the way she’s sitting.
So, I decided to give it another shot– only this time, I would pull the view back, to give emphasis to the twin tails, and show a little landscape of ships sailing–to match with what Starbucks quoted on their website about the origins of the logo.
Of the three concepts, I must say that the third one is closest to what I had in mind, from day one. It’s just not always easy, though I have been consciously practicing, to translate what I see in my mind, onto paper– and there are reasons for that. A mix of being satisfied with what I have so far, aaand not wanting to put in the work to try harder to get a concept to where I actually want it to be.
Because of this, I am all the more grateful to have friends who critique my work , especially since they’re not afraid to question my laziness or even logic! They make me think, encourage me to do better, and because of them, I’m able to flesh out my ideas more to get the best versions of them.
There are still some kinks that need to be worked out, here and there with this concept, but the next time you see this, it will be finished– though I don’t have a date on when that will be.
Well guys, that’s it for today, but more coming soon! And you can expect to see concepts involving wolves, and cowboys, and burlesque dancers, and fairies, reapers, and mythical beasts cuz that’s what I’ve been working on! Hope you liked this post, and as always, till next time, Enjoy!
